The concept of fiasco, which comes from the Italian language, refers to frustration or misfortune. The term is often associated with disappointment or failure.
For example: "The show was a fiasco since the singer was barely half an hour on stage" , "I think this real estate project will be a fiasco" , "The participation of the Spanish group in the tournament was a fiasco: they did not win a single match, tied two and lost four ” .
Starting from its meaning, we can state that among the main synonyms for fiasco are terms such as disappointment, disappointment, disappointment, setback or even bankruptcy. On the contrary, among its antonyms are words such as success, illusion, fortune, triumph…
In general, an event is classified as a failure when it does not meet the expectations it had generated. If people expect something that later does not happen or is not achieved, it is possible to speak of a fiasco.
Suppose an international singer arrives in a country for the first time. His fans, who have dreamed of that visit for years, sell out his show in a matter of minutes. The concert, however, ends up being a fiasco: the artist lip- syncs and the show lasts less than an hour. The public, in this context, leaves the stadium disappointed.
In the same way, it is very common for this term to be used within the sports field when a team fails to achieve the goals that its followers expect. Thus, for example, we can say that the 2018-2019 season was a real fiasco for Real Madrid fans because at the first change the team ran out of options to obtain any title. And it is that he fell in the Copa del Rey, in the Champions League and even in the League.
A married couple, on the other hand, experiences a fiasco when they go to a fancy restaurant to celebrate their anniversary. Despite paying a fortune, the food is not only bland, but diners even find an insect on one of the plates. In addition, the attention of the establishment leaves much to be desired. That is why the night dreamed by the couple ends in a fiasco.
Likewise, in the world of cinema the word fiasco is used to refer to films that, due to their history or their actors and even because of the budget behind them, were destined to become big box office successes and that later fail to achieve that triumph..
Specifically, we can establish that among the films that are considered the most fiascos in history are some such as "The Lone Ranger" (2013), in which more than 425 million dollars were invested and only managed to raise 260 million, or " The island of severed heads ”(1995), which cost 115 million dollars to make and only achieved at the box office 18.5 million worldwide.
Other film fiascos are "John Carter" (2012), "The fall of the Roman Empire" (1964) or "Sahara" (2005).
Finally, “Fiasco” is the title of a novel by the Polish Stanisław Lem that was released in 1987 and the name of an American rock band.
