In Latin it is where we can say that the etymological origin of the term orator that we are dealing with is found. It comes from “orator”, which is the result of the sum of two components of that language:
• The verb “orare”, which can be translated as “public speaking”.
• The suffix “-dor”, which is used to indicate “agent”.
The concept is used to name the subject who expresses himself publicly, usually through some type of speech or dissertation.
For example: “The biology congress included a Brazilian speaker who explained the consequences of climate change in the Amazon rainforest” , “The last speaker of the evening will be John Kappablanch, a British economist” , “The audience was fascinated with the speaker, who appealed to humor on several occasions ” .
The speaker, to achieve the effect he desires on his listeners, must master the art of public speaking. This discipline involves various techniques that allow the audience to be moved or persuaded.
The speaker's strategy will vary in each case, since sometimes he may prefer to focus on the dissemination of information, in others he will want to promote the action of the listener, etc. Suppose a person reads a speech on the anniversary of an institution. As a speaker, you most likely intend to report certain specific data (dates, names). If, instead, an individual must give a motivational talk between employees of a company, his objective will be to generate a change in each listener.
Many are the studies and investigations that have been carried out with the purpose of establishing what are the qualities and characteristics that a good speaker must possess. In this sense, we can say that these are the ones that are considered fundamental in this regard:
• It is essential that you take care of your personal hygiene, that is, that you go clean, combed, with cut nails…
• No less important is that you wear the most suitable way for every occasion.
• You are also considered to be in good physical health and have a positive mental attitude.
• From the point of view of intellectual qualities, it must be characterized by having a good memory, being imaginative, being sensitive to the situations of others and having initiative.
• With regard to moral characteristics, it is considered that a good speaker must be sincere, honest, loyal, consistent and punctual.
• Likewise, no less important is that he vocalizes correctly, that he acquires the right tone and rhythm, that he adapts his vocabulary to the audience he is addressing…
The studies carried out, analyzing all these characteristics, have shown that some of the best speakers in history have been Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Gandhi or Nelson Mandela.
The notion of speaker is also associated with prayer in a religious sense. A speaker, therefore, is the one who makes a request and, by extension, a preacher: “Father Manuel was a tireless speaker, who spent up to eight hours a day praying the Rosary” , “All the members of this congregation are speakers devoted to communication with God ” .
